Stronger Together: Insights from Historically Black Colleges and Universities
A recently released report “Stronger Together,” developed by the OLC in partnership with the National Accrediting Commission for Diversity and Inclusion, Tennessee State University, United States Distance Learning Association, and National Coalition of 100 Black Women found three primary areas for improvement, including student support, funding, and operations.
HBCUs play an essential role in advancing the nation’s capacity for leadership in quality learning experiences for all students. African Americans and other people of color comprise upwards of 35% of U.S. citizens and permanent residents in American colleges and universities. The number is growing and, in a few decades, students of color will make up the majority of students in the nation’s higher education institutions, the Pew Research Center has suggested.

Angela Gunder
Chief Academic Officer and VP of Learning – Online Learning Consortium
Angela Gunder is the Chief Academic Officer and VP of Learning for the Online Learning Consortium. In this role, she is responsible for gathering, curating, and leveraging the intellectual capital created by and disseminated through OLC. Prior to her position at the OLC, Angela served as the Director of Instructional Design & Curriculum Development for the Office of Digital Learning, managing and mentoring the team that builds the fully-online programs for The University of Arizona. Her over fifteen-year career as a designer for higher education informs her instructional design practice, where she leverages her expertise in web design, usability, visual communication, programming, and standards-based online learning. She is an Associate Editor for the Teacher Education Board of MERLOT, and the recipient of the 2018 MERLOT Distinguished Service Award, the organization’s highest honor. She is also the recipient of two Online Learning Consortium Effective Practice Awards for the creation of a framework for personal learning networks, and for the creation of exploratory installations of education technology.

Dr. Kim Cliett Long
Board Member – Online Learning Consortium
Dr. Kim Cliett Long currently serves as president and C.E.O. of Organizational Concepts/Adult Learners Now, a boutique firm serving colleges, universities, industry and entrepreneurs in the development of high quality distance learning and faculty development programs as well as consultation on instructional design and adult degree programs.
Dr. Long has previously held positions in higher education institutions as Director of Distance Learning and Instructional Design; Curriculum and Instruction; Project Management and Associate Provost for Administration and Extended Education and Professor of Organizational Management.
Dr. Long has provided campus-wide innovative academic leadership to enhance the undergraduate experience by spearheading the most innovative projects in online learning and technology in the classroom, uninhibited by pre-existing culture and structures and by encouraging interdisciplinary initiatives in curriculum and pedagogy. Further, Dr. Long directed the Center for Excellence in Distance Learning. The CEDL was founded to serve as a collaborative effort to ensure that HBCUs had access to ways to introduce teaching and learning using technology. The CEDL has been instrumental in mentoring other HBCUs in the process of starting high quality online programs that are affordable to the institution and beneficial for students everywhere. Dr. Long’s research interests include servant leadership and distance education access for diverse and underserved learners. She continues to interact with contemporary learners by serving as an online professor at Hampton University and University of Maryland University College. Dr. Long earned an Ed.D. degree from Northcentral University in Organizational Leadership. She is a Distance Learning Specialist certified in Distance Education by the University of West Georgia. She has earned the following certifications: Certified Program Planner in the area of Learning Program Management, Certified Faculty Developer and Certified Adult Educator. As a lifelong learner, she has earned credits toward a Ph.D. in General Psychology with an emphasis in Integrating Learning, Psychology and Technology from Grand Canyon University. Her M.S. degree from Mountain State University was earned in Interdisciplinary Studies with emphasis on Early Childhood Public Policy and Advocacy.
